Shrek 2...
We went to see the aforementioned movie last night. It had some great moments I thought. But, in general it was pretty weak. It relied heavily on current events and contemporary topics to make jokes, which means in years to come it will have lost a lot of what made it funny as current trends are forgotten. There were some great moments though, most of them based on the very good Puss in Boots character (voiced by Antonio Banderas), and there were some great movie in-jokes - scenes from Alien, From Here To Eternity, Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop, Austin Powers and others were parodied to good effect. Overall though, it was pretty average. A nice way to spend a couple of hours but with no staying power. I certainly won't be going back to the cinema to see it again.

If you go to see Shrek 2 thinking it will be anything more than a children's tongue in cheek film then you shouldn't have gone to see it at all.
It is not the type of film that warrents an in depth analysis or a critical essay on it and it will never be an oscar winning film because it's not dull or boring enough for the critics.
It was just a fun film that makes people laugh, and it does what it says on the tin.
Thanks for the comment, but if you think what I wrote about Shrek 2 was "in depth analysis or a critical essay" then I'm guessing you don't read many critical analyses. And in actual fact you seemingly didn't read what I wrote anyway because I more-or-less agree with you, light-hearted comedy that does what it intended. Keep in mind, I went to see Shrek 2 and laughed as much as anyone. However, there are plenty of films of the same type that have been able to rise above simple entertainment - Toy Story, for example, was thoroughly entertaining as well as being a good movie and some of the older Disney animated movies are excellent. My point being that it is possible to make a "kids" movie that reaches further than low-common-denominator humour. The other problem with Shrek and Shrek 2 is that people tell me they are great movies; perhaps what they mean is that the movies made them laugh a lot. Citizen Kane is a great movie, Shrek 2 is a pretty funny movie. It's almost as if movie-goers are being conditioned by movie studios (trying to make easy money) into forgiving bad films if they make them laugh or cry.
I know I am a movie-snob (just like my brother is a music-snob) and many people will say that I take it all too seriously. They're probably right.
